ARTIST STATEMENT

Painting is a form of exploration for me. Developing works in series allows me to examine a topic from a variety of viewpoints, both physical and emotional. New thoughts and reactions grow out of each encounter with the subject, one painting leads to the next.

Watercolor is a journey full of new discoveries. I begin a new work with a basic plan and try to allow for ideas to evolve along with the paint. The final destination is rarely known in advance, arrivals are often full of surprise. It is a continual learning process that helps keep the work fresh.

I explore a subject. I explore the media and techniques. I explore the world around me. I explore the world inside myself. The expressions of these explorations are my paintings. And these expressions lead me to further explorations. For me, this is the cycle of creativity.
